With Sheriff Mansfield and State Senator Cantrell barricaded inside the county jail and refusing to hand over the ballot box, the ex-soldiers decided there was only one thing left to do: get their guns.

But even that wasn’t enough.

So… welcome our hero Bill White with his handy little stick of dynamite… who blasted the jail door clean off!

The Battle of Athens was over. The GIs locked the deputies in the cells and finally took control of the ballot box.
