Significant figures show the precision of a measurement. They apply to measured values, not exact counts. All nonzero digits are significant, as are zeros between nonzero digits. Leading zeros are not significant, and trailing zeros are significant only when a decimal point is present. Scientific notation is a clear way to show the correct number of significant figures.
