Scientific notation is a short way to write very large or very small numbers using powers of 10. A positive exponent moves the decimal to the right, and a negative exponent moves it to the left. A number in scientific notation has a coefficient between 1 and 10 multiplied by a power of 10. On a calculator, the EE or E button represents “times 10 to the power of” and helps avoid errors.
