Early measurement systems used body parts, which made converting between units very difficult. The French developed the metric system to create a consistent standard, using the meter as the base unit of length. Metric units change by powers of 10, which makes conversions simple. Smaller units are made by dividing by 10, and larger units are made by multiplying by 10.
