It's made as an argument against when tyrants do this, you have the right to respond in this way. That's where it comes from.

And they, of course, knew that their right to respond this way did not protect them from being killed by the crown for saying these things. They all understood that. It was very explicit. Franklin himself, I believe, said, 'we must hang together or surely we will all hang separately.' Right?

They understood they were putting their lives on the line. But they also understood that they had the right to make that gamble and in some sense, the obligation to do it because the tyranny was intolerable."
